What is Forest School?
Our year-round programs take place in local parks, forests, and along creeks, where children engage in meaningful, hands-on experiences such as nature art, campfires, foraging, flora and fauna identification, active games, and land stewardship.
We blend guided activities with unstructured play, storytelling, and time to explore freely—allowing learning to unfold organically through curiosity, exploration, and discovery. In this supportive, mixed-age environment, children grow socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively while forming deep, lasting connections to nature.
We value:
Play-based, inquiry-driven learning
Ongoing connection to place and nature
Holistic development
The learning process as much as the outcome
Fostering a strong sense of community with our families
Every day is unique—but always rooted in nature, connection, and meaningful experience.
For full benefits of community building - long term immersion is recommended and we prioritize those who can commit to all 3 seasons.

This class is for families seeking a welcoming, nature-based community where children can explore, create, and learn through multi-age play. Perfect for fun-loving, energetic wildlings, it offers plenty of opportunities to roam, imagine, build, and discover in the great outdoors.
Through hands-on, child-led experiences, kids develop outdoor skills, teamwork, and confidence while following their natural curiosity in a supportive, nature-rich environment.
To support the varying needs of the children in our Forest School program, we will offer two learning pathways on most days. For example, children may choose between a creative, nature-based exploration or a more active outdoor adventure.
To better support different ages, interests, and developmental stages, we may occasionally divide the class into two smaller groups, allowing each group to engage more deeply in experiences that are best suited to them.

Throughout the year, participants will build practical skills such as fire making, hiking, shelter building, paddling, and foraging, while also engaging in creative projects, community service opportunities, and active group games.
In a fast-paced world, we intentionally create space to slow down, unwind, and reconnect with nature. Youth develop confidence, resilience, teamwork, and meaningful friendships in a supportive, nature-based environment designed for home learners. There is also ample time for free play, exploration, reflection, and simply enjoying the outdoors with peers. By balancing adventure, skill-building, and unstructured time in nature, we provide a low-pressure environment where youth can thrive, connect, and grow at their own pace.

What Awaits in the Woods
-
Through hands-on, play-based experiences, children develop confidence, independence, and resilience while learning valuable outdoor and life skills such as shelter building, plant identification, foraging, tool use, and creative problem-solving. Time spent caring for the land and engaging in group projects fosters responsibility, collaboration, and a deeper respect for the natural world.
-
We embrace a Forest & Nature School approach—honouring both the Land and each child’s natural curiosity and love of play. Our programs are especially supportive of families choosing alternative education paths, offering a rich, experiential learning environment where children can learn at their own pace.
Explore: climb, dig, build, and investigate the natural world
Create: use natural materials for art, storytelling, and construction
Reflect: pause, observe, and make sense of discoveries
Discover: follow curiosity and develop new ideas
Through this cycle of play → explore → reflect → discover, learning becomes a joyful adventure—where every puddle, tree, and stick can spark imagination, understanding, and lifelong curiosity.

A strong sense of community is at the heart of Into the Woods. Through regular, meaningful time spent together outdoors, children and educators build lasting relationships with each other and the Land. Mixed-age groups support peer learning, leadership, and deeper social bonds, while shared experiences like campfires, group games, and collaborative projects help children develop trust, communication, empathy, and a true sense of belonging.
-
Risky play is an essential part of healthy development. With guidance from experienced mentors, children engage in challenges like climbing, running, using tools, and testing their limits in a safe and supported way. This process helps them learn to assess and manage risk, while building confidence, resilience, independence, and strong problem-solving skills.

As part of our daily routine, we do finish each session with a tea time where we share in a warm herbal tea together.

The level of assistance we are able to provide depends on the success of our fundraising efforts and the funds available at the time of application.
As a small independent program, our ability to provide financial assistance is limited. Throughout the year, we organize fundraising activities, with all proceeds going into our Roots & Shoots Fund.
This fund allows us to help offset a portion of program fees for a small number of families. The amount of support available varies from year to year and depends on the success of our fundraising efforts.
